Looking back at 2011’s new American crop, these musicians are sitting squarely at the intersection of being themselves and finding something better with which to identify. It’s really fascinating how polarizing this can be… some of the music is categorized as an arms race of heaviness, draining the music of richness and subtlety by British peers Rusko and James Blake. Or it could be argued, this is wholly American: brash, extreme and compelling.
